Hi-ley, hi-lye, hi-lo
Hi-ley, hi-lye, hi-lo
Oh lordy hear us moanin'
We're moanin' and we're groanin'
We're moanin' for that Mo'nah girl

An old coloured preacher was sittin' on a log, (Oh Mo'nah)
Had his finger on the trigger and his eye on a hog. (Oh Mon'ah)
The gun said "boo!" and the hog said "vip!", (Oh Mon'ah)
The preacher grabbed him with all his grip! (Oh Mon'ah)

Oh Mon'ah, oh you shall be free, oh lordie lordie
Oh Mon'ah, oh yes you shall be, yes you shall be free
When the good Lord sets you free

I was wined down the road, (Oh Mon'ah)
Had a tired team and a heavy load. (Oh Mon'ah)
I popped my whip and the lead horse sprang, (Oh Mon'ah)
And the hind horse busted the wagon's tongue! (Oh Mon'ah)

Oh Mon'ah, oh you shall be free, oh lordie lordie
Oh Mon'ah, oh yes you shall be, yes you shall be free
When the good Lord sets you free

I was down behind the henhouse on my knees, (Oh Mon'ah)
When I thought I heard a chicken sneeze. (Oh Mon'ah)
He sneezed so hard with the whooping cough, (Oh Mon'ah)
That he sneezed his head and his tail right off! (Oh Mon'ah)

Oh Mon'ah, oh you shall be free, oh lordie lordie
Oh Mon'ah, oh yes you shall be, yes you shall be free
When the good Lord sets you...
